Late Night Snacking

It’s happened to us all at some point or another, you finish dinner, sit down and relax for a little while and then... BAM!

A sugar craving hits you like a tonne of bricks!

This can be due to a few reasons, but sometimes it’s psychological.

Meaning your body is used to a certain routine or it has become a habit for you to eat something sweet after dinner.

This can also be an emotional trigger (I will leave this subject for another article).

So maybe try changing your routine a little, rather than watching TV, go for a 5min walk or read a book instead, just change what you do so your brain doesn’t send the same signals.

A great way to help you feel full after dinner and avoid cravings is to drink some more water, sometimes our body mistakes thirst for hunger, so another great reason to stay hydrated! Mineral water is best as the bubbles make you feel fuller!

But if you are someone who does like a treat and find it hard to avoid, you could try a better alternative, some fruits such as berries, strawberries or watermelon are low in calories so are a better alternative than sweets or chocolate, but can still satisfy the sweet craving.

A snack higher in protein is also great as this will give you a sense of satiety.

Here’s a healthy sweet snack option for you:

Zesty Lemon Balls

Ingredients 4 scoops vanilla protein powder (I used optimum nutrition 100% Casein) 1⁄2 cup almond meal 1⁄2 cup coconut flakes (Mckenzie’s moist coconut flakes are best!) 1⁄2 cup skim milk zest of one lemon 1⁄4 cup dessicated coconut

Method

  • Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl (use folk, spoon or hands)

  • Gradually mix in milk until the mixture comes together and is a consistency which holds when you squeeze in the palm of your hand

  • Roll mixture into balls, coat in dessicated coconut and place on tray

  • Refrigerate in air tight container to store.
